Om plaats te maken voor uitbreiding van de "collectie" is Dracula uit logeren bij Corneel. De uitbreiding kwam dit weekend in de vorm van Doctor Who, een Bally flipperkast uit 1992. Een mooi (onverkleurd) en goed onderhouden exemplaar uit de exploitatie waaraan behalve de veel voorkomende schade voor het mini-playfield weinig mankeert.
Ongeveer twee jaar geleden was de Theatre of Magic dé kast die mij het meeste aansprak en mij misschien wel in deze verslavende hobby heeft opgeslokt. Toen had ik nooit gedacht dat ik er ooit zelf nog een zou hebben!
Vorige maand heb ik dus afscheid genomen van Starship Troopers, maar Revenge From Mars welkom mogen heten. Toen we dit bakbeest eenmaal binnen hadden staan bleek het toch wel veel mensen aan te spreken. De 'Tilt' documentaire had ik al een aantal keren bekeken natuurlijk en ook de ontwikkeling omtrent NuCore volgde ik met interesse, zeker toen ik de RFM op het oog kreeg. Anyway, inmiddels heb ik ook een erg mooie Star Wars Episode I kit gekocht, hij lijkt werkelijk nieuw...
Het spel staat niet bekend om z'n diepgang maar ik ben tot nu toe nog positief verrast! Ook leuk om een paar Popadiuk design trekjes van Cirqus Voltaire terug te zien in deze kast. Mesa happy!
Komende zaterdag zal na 14 maanden van trouwe dienst mijn eerste flipperkast, Starship Troopers, zogenoemd the building leaven. Ik vind het nog steeds een erg leuke en uitdagende kast; qua spel afwijkend van de modus eind jaren negentig.
Hij is momenteel in erg goede staat en ook nog eens aardig schoon; dus ik kon het niet laten om mijn laatste game op te nemen:
Een erg leuke en indrukwekkende vakantie was het. 3 Weken, 4 steden, 5 homies; een onvergetelijke ervaring :)

Aangezien deze site momenteel een beetje op flipperen toegespitst is, toch maar een apart stukje over de hall of fame.
Las Vegas - en voornamelijk de 'strip' - had ik eigenlijk al gauw gezien, en van al die gokkasten werd ik bijna misselijk. er waren een aantal hotels met een arcadehal (ons eigen hotel ook), maar met uitzondering van New York New York hadden ze geen van allen een flipperkast.
Natuurlijk had ik van tevoren allang gepland dat ik naar de Pinball Hall of Fame zou gaan. Uiteindelijk ben ik er twee keer vrij lang geweest. Het is niet meer dan een vrij lelijke ruimte met veel flipperkasten erin. Maar de mensen die er komen, komen ook echt om te flipperen. De kasten zijn allen in super speelstaat. _Alles_ werkt, en als je ziet dat er een lampje uitgebrand is of er een bal vasthangt dan wordt dit á la minute opgelost door Tim Arnold of zijn collega.
Naast de vele (!!) DMD kasten (alle generaties en merken) zijn er ook de meest bekende Solid State kasten aanwezig, en daarnaast ook een veelvoud aan EM-ers. Erg leuk om te zien dat bezoekers van de hal toch voor een bepaalde generatie komen. Een zakenman die ik beide keren heb zien binnenkomen, speelde exclusief op Theatre of Magic.
Tim Arnold meldde dat hij op zoek is naar een ruimte die 2 tot 3 keer zo groot is, liefst wat dichter bij de strip. Hij erkende dat hij dan personeel aan zou moeten nemen om het draaiende te houden. Hij koopt verder alle nieuwe Sterns (Batman was aanwezig) om dit bedrijf te steunen, maar wordt hierbij niet gesponsord door Stern. Over de kwaliteit van de Sterns was hij trouwens niet echt te spreken; materiaal was te fragiel volgens hem en ballen bleven overal klem zitten.
Gisteren ben ik een middag gaan flipperen bij Skip. Zijn collectie onderging de afgelopen week nogal wat wijzigingen, en 1 daarvan was dat ik 's avonds zijn Dracula mee naar huis mocht nemen.
Hij stond nog amper rechtop of het huis was alweer gevuld met vrienden die de nieuwe aanwinst kwamen bekijken. De kast speelt heerlijk en het is echt een verslavend spel.
Een nieuwe toevoeging aan de flipper pagina op deze site is dat je kunt klikken op de naam van een speler, en van hem onder andere highscores, foto's maar ook grafieken van zijn of haar voortgang kunt bekijken :)

Na bijna een jaar zo nu en dan knutselen is de site technisch dan eindelijk een beetje op orde. De meeste zaken van de flipperpagina kunnen nu op 1 pagina beheerd worden. Na de splitsing van PHP en HTML code kon ik het ook niet laten om de site XHTML valid te maken.
Verder nieuws: Zoals het er nu uit ziet zal over twee weken Count Dracula zijn intrede doen in mijn appartement; in de vorm van flipperkast 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' welteverstaan.
De rulesheet ligt op m'n nachtkastje en ik ben klaar voor de uitdaging! Laat die gapende outlanes en korte flippers maar komen!
Het was een lange, maar erg leuke dag in Etten! De flippercollectie die klaarstond was zeer divers en technisch perfect in orde. Zeker voor herhaling vatbaar! :)
Heb de PHP en HTML van deze site vandaag eens gescheiden omdat vooral de Pinball pagina nogal wat verschuivingen in code doorgaat. Nu nog een fatsoenlijke back-end en de html valid maken.
Morgen met Steffi en Joost naar Etten Open Air... een middag met 80 flipperkasten op freeplay van oude electromechanische kasten tot de nieuwste Indiana Jones van mei 2008. We hebben zin erin...
Tonight I finally had some time to work on the X-Files pinball machine. Earlier I already replaced a broken flipper bushing and aligned the flippers correctly. Tonight I also replaced the flipper rubbers, and replaced lots (15+) lamps and flashers. To do this I had to remove both the ramps which I gave a quick once-over with cleaner as well.
The result is very nice: finally the bumper area is well-lit (all lamps in the lane posts were broke), the loop area of the transparent ramp is now of acceptable clarity and the whole playfield has been cleaned so the games is a lot faster at the moment... not bad for a (long) evening :)
The pinball page of this site has been the most active part of the site lately.
It's linked to a couple of database tables which can be used by my friends to input their scores directly!
Check often for new scores, statistics and pics :D

ROFLCon is the ongoing record of an effort to assemble every famous internet meme or celebrity to come to Harvard in the spring of 2008 to attend a conference. Presumably, they're going to talk about fame online.
Provisionally, the event is planned to take place April 25, 26, or 27, 2008 in Cambridge.
After living 23 wonderful years with my parents and brother I figured it was about time to move out... I got really lucky.. and now a beautiful apartment is mine! It's right in the middle of Roermond.. two balconies.. nice view.. I love it! To celebrate this mature step in my life I decided it would be nice if my first piece of furniture were to be a pinball machine.. And since I am a man of my words that's exactly how it happened. Got a Starship Troopers pinball machine from 1998.. in great shape.. and a lot of fun to play! The light show is really crazy... I don't hope anybody with epilepsy will ever witness a multi-ball session on this machine ;)

For 5 years now I've had this love-hate relationship with a hobby called speedcubing.. Since I started with cubing in 2002 I have always loved the feeling of solving a cube.. Compared to other people I think I was a pretty slow learner.. But especially getting the times down to sub-30 has been a fun process. My problem has always been that I had too much fun 'just' cubing that I didn't take the time to learn new algorithms and systems. Nevertheless my times got better and somehow I managed to average 20.95s in the European Championship 2004 which got me 5th place in the final... out of the blue, really.
After that the 4x4x4 really became my favorite and I was having fun in competitions trying to out-luck fellow Dutchies Ron van Bruchem and Michael Fung in that category. On 4x4x4 I did my best times during the Dutch Open 2006 (1:09.74 average, 57.47 single).
It got obvious though that I was not a competitive person, really.. I just wasn't motivated to practice at home, because I knew it was a useless hobby anyway and somebody else would practice more and have more talent. After I realised that, which was somewhere in 2006 I think, I just lost the focus on speed at all and started to pay more attention to efficiency and overall smoothness of my moves.
Anyway... I still like cubing a lot, especially the bigger cubes, but the competition element just isn't my thing... Also the puzzle pieces that should form the picture of my life are slowly starting to fall in their places... my life is getting busier but above all more enjoyable.. so that's why I have decided I don't really have the 'need' anymore to participate in speedcubing competitions so often... Of course there are a lot of great people I've met through these competitions and the meetings with them always have been a lot of fun... so my goal is to stay in touch with the community by visiting at least one competition each year... Dutch Open for example (although this year I might not make it)..

At the Dutch clarinet convention in Utrecht last april, I witnessed a performance that really surprised and touched me. Michel Marang mainly on Bb clarinet and Peter van Os on accordion really stood out that day as far as I'm concerned... especially their renditions of some klezmer traditionals gave me goose bumps... For the sake of reviving some old content I wanna link you guys to a tutorial I wrote back in the summer of '69 about some tricks I thought up to create movie transitions with the aid of UnrealEd. The techniques may be useless now that movie makers have great tools like RypelCam.. but you never know... ;)
Wow, it's that time again.. a new BasePlace.. The last one was really getting old, and focused on speedcubing only, which is not a main hobby of me anymore. But most of all I just wanted to make a new site again and have some fun with Photoshop, HTML and PHP... and a little bit of Flash.
